Far-flung Visitors Impressed With Faults And Fossils

Yesterday, geologists from the South of England finished their week-long geological tour of the Province and Donegal on a high note with a visit to our Carmean Limeworks.

Members of the Wessex Open University Geological Society and the Dorset Geologist's Association were impressed with the geology on display at Carmean, which was shown to them by their guide for the day, our Quality, Technical & Environmental Manager, Angus Kennedy, who is also a geologist himself. David Glasgow, our KTP Associate based at Carmean, helped supervise the large group.

Being very geologically minded, a number of our visitors took copious notes of the features to be seen at Carmean: an ignimbrite (evidence of explosive volcanic activity), the large Carmean fault, smaller 'ladder faults', a basalt 'dyke' cutting the chalk, and of course, lots of fossils. Though the fossil bearing area has been picked over lots of times before, Angus was still surprised at the number of fossils found by the group, which included some large ammonites.

Alan Holiday, the group's leader, expressed his thanks to both Angus and David for their assistance in demonstrating the geology and shepherding them around
this amazing site.
